After lunch, a quick TV show, and her nap, we make it over to the farm. I need this as badly as I imagine Lottie does after the morning we’ve had.

I love my job, but people have a tendency to demand treatment for themselves or their loved ones on the spot, and I’ve yet to create a comfortable boundary around it. Compounding the problem is the fact that I’m trying to establish a new business in a new town. I need the positive press and word of mouth, but I also need to set a precedent about how people can interact with me.

So when someone from the diner texts me for advice, I choose avoidance. I shove my phone deep into my pocket and turn to Lottie and Louis.

She handled the crowds at the diner well this morning, but it seems to have worn her out, because when a farm worker comes into the stalls, she glues herself to my side. Even when the worker leaves, though, Lottie stays next to me.

All afternoon, we remove rocks from the animals’ hooves, feed them, and change the hay in their beds. When Lottie starts brushing them, it leads to more play than anything, but it also allows her to take a few steps away from me, even if she constantly glances behind her to check where I am.

When my brother calls, I take it without thinking.

“Hey bro.”

“Hey, Mill. You gotta do something about the Momster,” he says. Jason launches into an explanation about how Greg called Mom this morning and how Mom’s nerves are shot since finding out about Brianna’s pregnancy. Mom and Greg are talking on the phone every day, recounting their every possible fear and worst-case scenario.

“What are you and Dad doing about it?”

“Having them talk to you, obviously. What the crap could we add to the conversation?”

“You could listen. You could validate their fears—”

“Come on, like I know anything about validating someone’s fears,” he says, as if it’s technical jargon instead of a normal part of having loved ones.

While we’re talking, I keep an eye on Lottie, noticing how she’s slowly allowed a bit more distance between us. She doesn’t mind walking a few feet away from me, but she looks over her shoulder constantly to make sure I’m there. Talking to my brother means Lottie can hear me even if I’m not in arm’s reach.

After a few minutes, Lottie tries to get my attention, but I smile at her and point to the phone. I hope this is a gentle way to help her tolerate not having constant attention. I pace around the animal’s stall for a moment before I hear Lottie call for me just out of eyesight.

“Hey, Jason, I need to run,” I say.

“What could be more important than helping your own family?”

I bite back a million retorts. My family is great. I love them. But they all have the same modus operandi: if it’s broke and it talks, have Millie fix it.

Jason is there with our family.
